How blood work and basic checks help keep your weight-loss plan safe.
At SendSlim Clinic, we use labs and simple tests to better understand your health and to make sure any treatment or medication we use is as safe as possible. This page explains what we may check, why we check it, and what you can expect.
Why Labs Matter in Medical Weight Loss
Weight is only one part of your health.
Before we start or adjust a plan, we often need to look “under the hood” and see how your body is doing on the inside.
Labs and tests help us:
- Look for hidden problems (like diabetes or thyroid issues)
- Make sure your kidneys and liver can handle certain medicines
- See your starting point before treatment
- Watch for side effects and changes over time
We do not order the same labs for every person.
Your clinician will choose tests based on your history and needs.
Common Labs We May Order
Below are examples of labs we may order as part of your care.
You may not need all of these.
1. Blood Sugar Tests
To check for diabetes and pre-diabetes.
Fasting glucose – blood sugar after not eating for several hours
A1c – your average blood sugar over the last 2–3 months
These tests help us see how your body handles sugar and how weight loss may affect your risk.
2. Cholesterol & Fats (Lipid Panel)
To see how fat moves in your blood.
Cholesterol (total, LDL, HDL)
Triglycerides
These numbers tell us about your heart and blood vessel risk and how weight loss might help.
3. Liver Tests
To check how well your liver is working.
Often part of a CMP (comprehensive metabolic panel), these tests help us:
Make sure the liver is healthy enough for certain medicines
Look for problems like fatty liver or other liver stress
4. Kidney Tests
To check how well your kidneys are working.
Also part of a BMP or CMP, these tests help us:
See if your kidneys can safely handle certain medications
Watch for any changes over time
5. Complete Blood Count (CBC)
To check your blood cells.
This can show:
Anemia (low red blood cells)
Signs of infection or inflammation
Other blood-related issues
6. Thyroid Tests
To see if your thyroid is slow, fast, or normal.
A common test is:
TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)
Thyroid problems can affect weight, energy, mood, and more.
If needed, we may suggest you see your primary care provider or an endocrine specialist.
7. Pregnancy Test (When Needed)
For people who can become pregnant, we may need a pregnancy test:
Before starting certain medications
When there is any chance of pregnancy
Many weight-loss medicines are not safe during pregnancy.
It is very important that we know if you are or might be pregnant.
8. Other Labs (Case by Case)
Sometimes we may order other tests such as:
Vitamin D
Vitamin B12
Hormone tests
Other labs based on your health history
Your clinician will explain why any extra labs are recommended.
When We Do Labs
We may recommend labs at different times:
Before starting certain medications – to check safety
Soon after starting a new medicine – to make sure your body is handling it well
Once or twice a year – for ongoing monitoring, depending on your health
If you already have recent lab results from your primary care provider, we may be able to use those instead of repeating them, as long as they are recent enough and include what we need.
Where You Get Labs Done
SendSlim is a telehealth clinic, so we do not draw blood in our office. Instead, we:
Send lab orders to a local lab (for example, a national lab or a local facility)
Or give you an order form you can take to a lab of your choice
You will go to the lab in person to have your blood drawn.
The lab then sends the results electronically back to us.
You can usually:
Use a lab that works with your insurance, or
Ask the lab about cash-pay pricing if you prefer to pay out of pocket
Fasting and Lab Prep
Some tests require fasting (not eating) before your blood is drawn.
If fasting is needed, we will tell you clearly.
General fasting instructions (if required):
Do not eat or drink anything except water for about 8–12 hours before the test
Take medications as instructed by your clinician
Drink water so you stay hydrated
Always follow the exact instructions given with your lab order, as they may be different for certain tests.
Getting Your Lab Results
When your lab results come in:
They are sent to your clinician through our secure system.
We review them and decide if any changes are needed.
We share results with you through the patient portal and/or during your next visit.
We will explain:
What each important result means in plain language
Which numbers we want to improve
How your plan or medications may change based on the results
If something looks urgent or worrisome, we will contact you with next steps.
Other Measurements We May Use
In addition to blood tests, we may ask you to track:
Weight – ideally using the same scale, at similar times of day
Waist size – sometimes helpful to track fat around the belly
Blood pressure and heart rate – using a home cuff, if you have one
Blood sugar readings – if you have diabetes or a home monitor
Some patients may choose to use a smart scale or other home devices.
We will tell you if these tools are recommended for your situation, but they are not required for everyone.
Costs and Billing for Labs
It is important to know:
Lab tests are usually billed by the lab, not by SendSlim Clinic.
We do not control lab pricing or your insurance coverage.
You may:
Use your insurance if the lab accepts it, or
Ask the lab about their cash prices if paying out of pocket
If you are concerned about cost, please let us know so we can:
Talk about which tests are most important
Help you ask the lab about pricing options
Labs Do Not Replace Your Primary Care Provider
Labs and tests at SendSlim are used to support your weight-loss care.
We still recommend that you:
Keep a regular primary care provider
Continue with routine checkups, vaccines, and cancer screenings
Follow up with other specialists as needed (for example, heart doctor, endocrine doctor)
If we find something outside the scope of our weight-loss program, we may advise you to see your primary care provider or a specialist.
Questions About Labs & Tests?
If you are a current patient and have questions about your labs:
Please send a message through the patient portal, or
Bring your questions to your next visit
If you are not yet a patient:
You can learn more by visiting our Program, How It Works, and Pricing pages, then
Start with a New Patient visit to see what labs might be right for you
Remember:
If you ever have severe or sudden symptoms (chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs, severe allergic reaction, or thoughts of self-harm):
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
Labs and telehealth visits are important, but they never replace emergency care when it is needed.
